For all the hype given to the construction of powerful backlink systems, no one shall still deny the fact that what really makes a good website is good content. This spans the gamut of materials and data that you find right on the websites pages, from images and text to the sites design and navigational structure. It is called on page optimization for a reason: everything you see on the page is part of it.
As such, it should be clear that on page optimization is not exactly easy to grasp in its totality. Some people focus on one aspect to the detriment of the rest. For instance, there are marketers who believe that a website can get by simply with fantastic text content even if it has mediocre design. There are marketers who believe the obverse, and that a site can get by with fantastic design even if it has mediocre content. Strictly speaking, both of them are probably right: if the fantastic adjective is truly merited by those respective elements, their sites shall probably get by. But shall they ever see fantastic traffic or profit?
What makes a good website is great attention to detailon everything. Off page optimization strategies are also part of the package, naturally, but let us limit this discussion to on page optimization for now. And in on page optimization, you have to really consider how everything reacts with everything else: whether or not the text you have put up goes well with the images you are placing next to it, whether or not your titles have been optimised for search engines as well as human preferences and quirks in scanning, whether or not your site design sets the same tone as your content, and so on. The list is nearly endless.
The most basic rule of on page optimization, then, is most likely this: be consistent in the application of your standard. If you feel that you cannot permit anything but the best content on your site, why in the world would you settle for anything but the best design? For that matter, why would you select anything but the best navigational tools? Always look for the best options to go with each other, and you shall be likely to achieve the best results as well.
